Running for Sikh Rights

Have you been fired from a job or bullied at school because you’re Sikh?  Maybe you’ve had your identity mistaken or been “randomly searched” at the airport a few too many times.  No fear, the Sikh Coalition is here!  For the past decade this organization has been on the cutting edge of Sikh American civil rights.  Their presence is felt all the way in the halls of Washington, DC where even Congress members are taking notice of the Coalition’s work.

So what can you do to ensure the Coalition stays strong and is there when you need them?  Easy, just walk, run, or donate!  This Saturday, September 17th, the Sikh Coalition is having its first ever 5K for the 5Ks Walk/Run in Sunnyvale, CA.  The fundraiser is a one of a kind community event.  Neha Singh, a member of the 5K planning committee says, “The event marks the 10th anniversary of the Sikh Coalition.  It’s a coming out for the organization’s presence on the West Coast.  With all the families here, the event promises to be a bunch of fun for everyone.”

After the 5K, there will be a mela with everything from a magic show for kids to performances by artists including Ishmeet Narula, Mandeep Sethi, and Raginder ‘Violinder’ Momi. “Just like the Coalition’s civil rights work, this event was planned with the community in mind,” says Singh.

The Sikh Coalition’s work is never done.  With our burgeoning community, Sikhs often find themselves in neighborhoods and towns where they’re the only Sikhs around.  Racism, hate and prejudice are very much alive in this country.  The Coalition is that jewel of an organization that’s making real strides on the road to progress.  So this Saturday, give them some well-deserved support!

Get more information, register or donate online.  Or just come out to Baylands Park in Sunnyvale this Saturday where registration tables will be open.

Stay fresh, stay fearless.
